What this site counts, and what it doesn’t
The short version: I count visits to arshkumar.com and play.arshkumar.com as anonymous totals, to see which parts of the site are useful. I don’t know who you are, nothing follows you around, and you can switch it off below.
Don’t want to be counted? This applies to arshkumar.com and its subdomains, on this browser.
Who I am
This site is run by me, Arsh Kumar, as an individual. I’m the controller for the data described here. Contact: hello@arshkumar.com.
What gets counted
A small script (/track.js) adds your visit to daily totals:
- How long the page was in use, rounded into ranges (like “1–3 minutes”), and time per section
- How far down the page people scroll (25, 50, 75, 100%)
- Which buttons and links are used, by a fixed label (like “email” or “github.com”). Never what you type
- Which welcome-page template was picked (like “ML hiring”). Never your name, company or job title
- Device type (mobile, tablet or desktop), country, and the website that linked here (just its domain)
Each visit is added to the totals as it happens. No record of your individual visit is kept: no ID, no cookie for counting, no IP address, no fingerprint, so visits can’t be linked to each other or to you.
Why: to see which parts of the site work, and improve it. This is allowed without asking first because it is only used for statistics to improve the site and you can object (UK PECR, Schedule A1 paragraph 5). Under UK GDPR, the lawful basis is legitimate interests. The totals hold no personal data, so I keep them.
Not counted at all
- Visitors in the EU, EEA and Switzerland
- Browsers that send Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track
- Anyone who chose “Don’t count my visits”
Tailoring the page
If you fill in the welcome form, or open a personal link I sent you, the page uses your name, company and role to tailor itself. This happens only in your browser: the details sit in your browser’s session storage and disappear when you close the tab. They are never sent to me or anyone else.
What’s stored on your device
| Name | What it does | How long |
|---|---|---|
ak-theme (cookie) | Remembers light or dark mode across arshkumar.com sites | 1 year |
ak-notrack (cookie) | Only set if you choose “Don’t count my visits” | 1 year |
ak-intro (session storage) | Skips the welcome screen after you’ve seen it | Until you close the tab |
ak-for (session storage) | The details you typed into the welcome form, used to tailor the page | Until you close the tab |
These are needed for things you ask for, or keep your display choice. You can object by clearing them in your browser; the site works without them.
Who else is involved
The site runs on Cloudflare, which processes requests on my behalf as a data processor, including handling your IP address to deliver pages. Fonts and scripts are served from this site, not from third parties. Nothing is sold or shared for advertising.
Your rights, and complaints
Because the counts are anonymous totals, I can’t find or change “your” data in them. You have rights under UK GDPR (access, objection, erasure and others). Email hello@arshkumar.com with any question or complaint. I’ll acknowledge it within 30 days. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office.
Changes
If this changes, I’ll update this page and its version and date at the top.
